Partnering with our local community: A visit to Bob Rumball

February 25, 2025

The North Toronto Ontario Health Team recently partnered with the Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf to organize a stethoscope check event for senior residents at the centre.

The event helped mark Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, with more than 60 residents participating. Of those, a few heart murmurs were picked up, with patients to receive follow-up from the team in Sunnybrook’s Schulich Heart Program.

Heart valve disease is common and serious, but treatable. The heart has four valves that open and close to control blood flow to the body. If one or more of those valves don’t open or close properly, that means a person has heart valve disease. It may be something you were born with, or that develops during your life. Knowing the symptoms to look out for and when you should see a healthcare provider are the best ways to detect and treat possible heart valve disease. The event was supported by Heart Valve Voice Canada.

“The North Toronto Ontario Health Team is committed to connecting residents with the care they need,” explains Kitty Liu, Director, North Toronto Ontario Health Team. “This successful event wouldn’t have been possible without strong collaboration with Bob Rumball, Heart Valve Voice Canada and Sunnybrook’s heart and primary care teams.”
